MUSD Board Policy Reminder re: Short-Term Independent Study

Posted Date: 10/23/25 (9:15 AM)

Greeting MHS!

Sending a reminder about short-term independent study as we head into the coming months with Thanksgiving and Winter Break. Please read the information below carefully and be aware of the timelines and deadlines for short-term independent study requests. We will not honor any request that does not follow the established timelines as per MUSD Board Policy.

Any Milpitas High School student and their parent/guardian requesting short-term independent study during the school year must apply at least 10 school days in advance for a short-term independent study agreement. This agreement form is available from Traci Hollenback (thollenb@musd.org). You must meet with her to sign the agreement form. The length of the agreement shall be no less than three (3) days and no more than fourteen (14) days.

Absences for students whose request for short term independent study was denied will be considered unexcused ("U").

Requirements for the short-term independent study agreement:
1. Homework assignments are required for each class.
2. Appropriate signatures from student, parent, and teachers must be obtained before the student leaves.
3. A student can only request an Independent Study Agreement once per school year for a maximum of fourteen (14) days.
4. Parent must notify the school office ten (10) school days in advance before the start date of short-term independent study.
5. Independent study cannot be scheduled during the first 10 days and the last 10 days of the school year. They also cannot be scheduled during state testing time (March 31-April 2, 2026).
6. Independent study shall not be calendared or combined with district school breaks that are five days or more (Thanksgiving - Nov 24-28; Winter Break - Dec 22-Jan 5, 2026; Mid-Winter Break - Feb 16-20, 2026; Spring Break - April 13-17, 2026).

All work done while on short-term independent study must be completed upon student’s return to school. Thank you for following our short-term independent study policy and expectations. Email Ms. Traci Hollenback (thollenb@musd.org) if you have any questions.

Mr. McMurray, Assistant Principal
