It is a great privilege for PTSA to host our 2017 annual Teachers/Staff Appreciation Lunch yesterday 5/16/2017.  Teachers and staffs enjoyed the food we prepared for them, and all feel happy that another great year went by with the MHS students.

I'd like to write this email to sincerely thank those parents and families who have brought their prepared food for the lunch, donated cash to the event, and especially those who took time to come help with the setup, serving, and clean up at the event.  Without your support, we would not make the event a success!

If anyone still wants to contribute to the event, we still accept cash donation for it.  You may leave an envelope of your donation at the MHS main office with title to MHS PTSA, and a note for Appreciation Lunch;  Or make online paypal donation at  http://trojanparent.weebly.com/

Regards,

Jessie Keung

MUSD needs OUTGOING and ENERGETIC students who are willing to attend community events and sports events , such as PAL football, little league, even our school concerts and sporting events.  The objective is to get more parent input on budget priorities in MUSD. If you are interested you would be doing this:

  • use your phones or digital devices to provide access to online survey
  • set-up tables at the events with two district chromebooks as a survey post
  • share postcards with QR code access to the survey so parents can use their own phones to access the survey
  • create posters for the survey posts, maybe at ticket booths.

This work would take place at various events until Dec. 9th.   Ten teams of students, 2 to a team, are needed. They are looking for ideally 20 students to help with this.   If you are still interested after reading this, then you must attend a lunchtime meeting for more information on November 8th with our Interim Superintendent Ms. Cheryl Jordan.  Please send me your name and ID# if you are interested in attending the lunchtime meeting.  The meeting will take place in room P-19.

Friday Oct. 14th by 6th period is the deadline to turn in community service hours that are guaranteed to appear on your transcripts for the fall.  The hours you turn in by Oct. 14th will be guaranteed to appear on your transcripts for anything you might be choosing to use them for, ie; college apps, jobs, etc.

This does not mean that ALL hours (20 hours needed for graduation or 150 to receive maroon chords) are due by then, just that if you want to make sure all your hours up until now appear on your transcript, turn them in by that date.  Do not wait! Come by before then and turn them in and check out my office hours.  You can continue to turn them in after that date however they are not guaranteed to appear on your transcript for fall.

Here are reminders about a few community service opportunities happening this weekend!  I have already sent these out however in case you forgot here they are again!  Please contact the representatives for each event directly.  You can print off the community service sheets which are attached to this message.  You do not need pre approval.  Have a great weekend and if you participate in any of these events, send pictures so I can post them on the website and share what our students are doing in the community!!

Today!

Community Resource Fair & Movie Night - Friday, Sept. 23rd.

Between 10-20 volunteers are needed for the Community Resource Fair and Movie Night to be held at Cardoza Park on Friday, September 23, 2016 that is happening between 5pm and 8pm. They will need help with set up, assistance during the resource fair, and help cleaning up afterwards. No training is required. If you have e mailed Eduardo and not gotten a response, you can just show up at the event because they still need many volunteers! You can also contact Eduardo Morales at Phone: (408) 262-2501 or Email at eduardo.morales@asm.ca.gov

Volunteers for the "Our Food is Medicine" event on Saturday, September 24th are needed! Volunteers are needed to help with setting up the room, registering people, serving food and cleaning up. On the day of the event, there will be 2 shifts: 11am-1pm and 1:30-3:30pm.

This event will take place at 1381 S. First Street, San Jose Ca 95110.

If you would like to do community service for this event, please email Jackie Gamboa at Jackie@teatrovision.org

The Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association (SNA) is looking for volunteers to help us deliver our October newsletter and to help man our annual Halloween party.  If you know of any students looking for community service hours, please call (408-942-1418).  Newsletters are hand delivered by adults & students to houses in the Sunnyhills area (areas that surround the high school).  Routes range from 30-90 houses and usually take about a minute a house to deliver--if one walks slowly.  SNA, a qualified 501(c)3 non-profit, offers community service hours to students using the minute a house formula and rounds the students time up to the nearest hour.  So if there are 30-60 houses in the route the student gets credit for an hour of community service, if the route is 61-90 houses they receive two hours of service.

6th Annual Teen Volunteer  Fair - This is taking place Saturday, Sept. 24th, 2016 from 9am to 12pm. at Lexus of Stevens Creek (3333 Stevens Creek Blvd. San Jose, CA 95117).  This is an opportunity to meet representatives from local agencies and charities and see what opportunities are out in the community for you!  Students who attend can also enter to win an Ipad Mini 2!  Come check out all the possible opportunities of places to volunteer at in the greater community.

Hi, all... Welcome to the 2016-17 School Year!

The Milpitas Community Educational Endowment (MCEE) is holding its annual donation drive. Please contribute what you can.

The mission of the MCEE is to partner with parents, the Milpitas Unified School District and the community to raise funds for providing educational opportunities for all students in the district as well as encouraging community involvement and support for our public schools.

With your generous support, we have raised over $70,000 for the endowment (a permanent funding source for the district), which is well on our way to our $100K goal. We continue to need your support to reach that goal.

Over this past year, MCEE has:

  • Partnered with the Jung Family Charitable Fund to provide $500 for a MHS scholarship (we have provided over $5,500 In scholarships over the past 7 years)
  • Continue Project Inspire to offer middle school students to hear from working professionals on college, vocational training, and careers.

This coming year, MCEE will be:

  • Hosting a candidates forum for school board in November
  • Partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to hold a summer job fair for high school students

Please use the attached form to donate to MCEE or donate online at mceefoundation.org.

Thank you for your support,

Robert Jung, Founder MCEE

Milpitas named a Best Community for Music for the third time.

Milpitas, CA. (March 24, 2016) – Milpitas Unified School District has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education. Milpitas Unified joins 476 districts across the country in receiving the prestigious award in 2016.

The Best Communities Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

Districts that have been recognized by the NAMM Foundation are often held up as models for other educators looking to boost their own music education programs.

To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Milpitas Unified answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

This award recognizes that Milpitas Unified is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the new federal education legislation, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The legislation, signed into law in December 2015, replaces No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testing—while leaving behind subject such as music. ESSA recommends music and the arts as important elements of well-rounded education for all children.

“I work with an incredible group of music teachers who set high standards for their students, and help students achieve at very high levels.   Our large and growing student enrollment in music is a testament to the work of these teachers and of the support music education has  received from the district, community, school board and administrators, " said Chris Kaldy, District Music Lead. “Each year a growing number of our students are also being recognized for outstanding individual achievement, and are being accepted into the California All-State Honor Bands and Orchestras as well as Youth Orchestras, Drum Corps, and top colleges throughout the United States.”

As Milpitas Unified finalizes its 2016-2017 budget, the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education Award and the implementation of the federal ESSA law bring attention to the importance of keeping music education part of the school’s core education for all students. It also highlights music’s vital role in students’ overall success in school

Community music programs have been drawing increased attention because of a landmark study by Northwestern University brain scientists. These researchers found new links between students in community music programs and academic success in subjects such as reading.

Beyond the Northwestern study, other reports indicate that learning to play music can boost academic and social skills, such as processing math and learning to cooperate in group settings.

A 2015 study, “Striking A Chord” supported by the NAMM Foundation, also outlines the overwhelming desire by teachers and parents for music education opportunities for all children as part of the school curriculum.

Milpitas Unified  has a total of 7 full and part time music teachers who serve 9 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and Milpitas High School, where they teach a total of 34 music classes and almost 1,000 students combined.

The classes include 18 elementary bands, 4 middle school bands, 4 high school concert bands, 1 percussion ensemble, 1 jazz band, 4 orchestras, 1 marching band and color guard, AP Music Theory, and 5 choirs.
